Easy DIY Room Decor Ideas for Teenagers

The bedroom is one of the few places where you can be yourself and express your true self. In a few hours or less, you can complete these simple DIY room decorating projects.

Chalkboard Label Calendar

Chalkboard paint and white label stickers are all you need to create trendy organizational chalkboard painted labels. Make a reusable wall calendar by sticking painted stickers on a large canvas, piece of poster board, or piece of cardboard in a grid pattern with six rows of seven instead of keeping track of your schedule digitally.

Place a sticker at the top of the board to represent the month, then fill in the weeks on the top row. To keep track of upcoming events, use colorful chalk.

Artistic Accent Wall

It’s not necessary to be artistic to create an abstract art accent wall since the idea is to convey feelings rather than reproduce recognizable images. To create a quick, unique look, trace household objects onto the wall in a random pattern and fill them in with paint.

Keepsake Box Collage

If you have an old jewelry box or keepsake box, you can give it a new look using white glue and paper. Get unique papers like book pages, baseball cards, lyrics to a favorite song, Instagram images, or old CD covers. Apply glue all over the box with a paintbrush and then cover the entire thing with another thin layer.

Custom Braided Rug

Using old sheets, thin blankets, old t-shirts, or new fabric, you can create a colorful, decorative braided rug you’ll love. You will need fabric strips that are about two inches wide and three to four feet long.

You can create a circular or oval rug in no time using a simple three-strand braiding technique. You add more strips and shape the rug as you go, braiding around in one big strand. Ribbon, twine, or string can be used to tie the rows together.

Woven Wastebasket

You can add style to every detail in your room, even the garbage can, by weaving a paper wastebasket. The paper you use for this project can be anything from colorful wrapping paper to old magazine pages.

Your wastebasket’s height will be determined by the length of your paper. You can use old movie posters or bulletin board paper to create a tall clothes hamper.

Beaded Curtains

An easy beaded curtain will add privacy and a relaxed vibe to your bedroom. Make your own beads from polymer clay or buy and cut bead strands. To hang down one or all four sides of your canopy bed, tie the strings to the top of the canopy frame.

Hang a hula hoop from the ceiling near your headboard and tie the beads around three quarters of it. Make sure the strands encircle your head without laying on you.

No-Sew Pillows

Make tied fleece accent pillows from your old pillows to create soft, comfortable, and stylish accent pieces. Cut tabs along the fabric’s edge and tie them together from each side of the pillow.

Sandwich the pillow between two larger, but equal pieces of fabric. Creating a plumper pillow filling is as simple as folding an old, flat pillow in half and adding an old t-shirt.

Patterned Sheet Set

Update plain, solid-colored sheet sets with a camouflage pattern or unique tie dye pattern. You’ll need some fabric paint and an open space to create your unique sheet set.

Make sure you plan ahead by choosing a few specific colors and visualizing the pattern on the fabric before you begin. Put them on your bed or use them to create one of a kind wall art.

Safety Pin Candle Holders

Take any standard candle from tea light to pillar, in a jar or on its own, from boring to cool with a few safety pins, wire, or elastic string, and some beads. Simply thread beads onto each safety pin then secure them together in a circle by stringing the wire through the top and then the bottoms. Safety pin candle holders can easily wrap around any jar or container to give it a new look instantly.

Bohemian Lampshade

Give your room a cool, laid back style with an easy DIY Bohemian lampshade. Use hot glue to stick some short bead strands around the bottom of the shade then drape a sheer scarf over top of the whole shade. You’ll not only have a cool accent piece, but it will cast a warm colored glow around the room.

Photo Tree

Use any color paint to make a tree photo gallery on one wall in your room. Find the center of the wall and paint a bare tree then hang picture hanging hooks on various branches around the tree. Ask your friends to create mini pieces of art you can hang around the tree.

Writing Utensil Wall Art

Make your room describe you by displaying a personal motto on one wall. Choose a text message symbol that best describes what you’re all about or your current mood to get started.

What You’ll Need:

  • The hot glue gun
  • There are many different sizes of writing utensils, such as crayons, pencils, pens, markers, colored pencils, chalk, etc.
  • The string
  • Hooks or nails for pictures

Directions:

  1. Use the utensils to create each letter by laying them on a flat surface and trying out different combinations.
  2. Once you’ve figured out how to make each letter, glue the writing utensils together. You’ll need to hold each seam for a few seconds to help it dry in the right formation.
  3. Tie equal lengths of string to the top of each letter then hang in order from evenly spaced nails or hooks on the wall.

Show Your True Colors

It doesn’t matter how often your tastes and interests change, your room decor can keep up. Changing the details of your bedroom to suit your personality has never been easier or more affordable thanks to DIY projects.
